Swansea stats that matter - Quality Shots

Quality shots

One of the most misleading stats in football is number of shots and shots on target. Shots can be poor, shots can be weak and shots can be hopeless. The old saying "If you don't shoot, you don't score!" has to be redefined to "If you don't fire some quality shots, you won't score!".

What are quality shots?

1. All shots on target when a save is required to prevent opposition from scoring
2. All actively blocked shots on target when a block is required to prevent opposition from scoring
2. All powerful shots towards goalkeeper when it's impossible for goalkeeper to control the ball
3. All shots that hit either post or crossbar and the ball rebounds into the penalty area

What are not quality shots?

1. All shots off target, no matter how powerful and close to the target
2. All shots off target deflected towards target (lucky shots)
3. All weak shots on target (easily saved and blocked)
4. All passively blocked shots on target when there isn't any possibility of the shot being deflected (examples: a free-kick taker shoots directly into the wall or a player who shoots directly into three defenders in front of him etc.)

Now when we have a definition in place let's see:
  • how many quality shots (QS) have Swansea had in the first four Championship matches this season,
  • which players have had most quality shots,
  • how many goals have each player scored.

As we can see our players' total shots to quality shots ratio is pretty impressive. Borja's numbers are great.

So we can add 1 for Naughton Borja and Celina. Celinas shots are usually pretty, it seems like always outside the box, his accuracy from distance is pretty good. But Borja 8 for 9 that is outstanding.

Only Hull and Birmingham do they have more shots. That is interesting considering where they are on the table. I saw a stat where Leeds needed 10 shots to find a goal last season, while the rest of the league needed only 7. I suppose you can have a higher quality quality shot.

Nope. We had more quality shots against Hull and Birmingham. Actually, Birmingham didn't have a single quality shot against us.

The number of quality shots for and against confirm what we already know:
  • we totally outplayed Hull and Birmingham
  • the game against Derby was pretty much even
  • Preston were better than Swans in the first half, second half was even
  • QPR were better than Swans in the second half, first half was even
