At least I've saved myself a little time because I won't be tuning in to watch this garbage on Quest tonight and watch the pundits gloating that it was only a matter of time before they were proved right. As it happens I have posted here before that, as happy as I am about our position, I've been far from convinced about the performances we've put in to achieve it.
Without going into a blow by blow account of each game, we all know that we were battered in the games against QPR and Leeds yet came away with 6 points. Commendable results but achieved well against the run of play. Then there were other games where we were pretty awful for 45 minutes before dragging ourselves back into contention to grab the points. You can only go to the well so often to do that and today was once too often.
I can't comment personally because I didn't see the game (nor do I intend to) but the sense I got from the comms on the broadcast, was that we just didn't engage in this match and there were too many players just GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS. Well, if that is in fact the case, then Cooper has got a lot of hard thinking to do if he wants to maintain our position at or near the top of the table. If his starters aren't doing it for him then he has to bring in fresh, hungry players who WILL do more than go through the motions and offer a whole lot more in terms of endeavour and commitment. Garrick is one such player who springs to mind.
Another thing. I've been reading from various players that Cooper's training varies slightly from that of Graham Potter who put more emphasis on ball retention and passing. Well, one thing I've noticed for myself is that so much of our play has become sloppy where we lose possession in situations where we shouldn't. Cooper has to put a stop to that and start instilling more of the Swanselona style into our game to augment his own style of play.
He has plenty of time to get to grips with these issues and get us back on track to push for promotion. But these problems must be addressed NOW and he has to be ruthless in dumping players who aren't up for putting in the effort it will take. Let's not flatter to deceive and let's not waste the great start we've had. We have the nucleus and talent of a team that can go all the way this season but sub-standard, lethargic performances such as today's must become a thing of the past.
