Spencer Davis

Sad to note that Spencer has passed away in California at the age of 81 following a heart attack. Spencer formed the Spencer Davis Group and enjoyed chart success in the 60s featuring Steve Windwood on lead vocals. Was surprised to learn when reading about this that, when he formed his first band The Saints, the bassist was a guy called Bill Perks later to become Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones.

He later moved to the University of Birmingham where he dated Christine Perfect who went on to marry Fleetwood Mac's John McVie. Before all this I remember him when he was Head Boy at Dynevor school in Swansea although we never met. His cousin, Brian 'Snowy' Davis, was a friend and classmate of mine and we both played for Dynevor school football team.

Anyway, it comes to us all at some time. Thanks for the music, Spencer, just 'Keep on Running' up there.

Sad news indeed Ivor, Spencer was my cousin. Never had a great amount of contact with him, actually his family moved up to Birmingham, and I recall going to visit the family in B/ham in my early teens along with my mother and auntie. Somehow contact was lost over the years and other than one visit he made back to Swansea never saw him again ,by this time he was in the limelight.

His parents moved back to Swansea, they lived in Mulberry Avenue in West Cross around the corner from my mum and dad.
I remember when I was a first year in Dynevor he called in to a music class and presented the teacher ( the late Clive John ) with a kipper tie !
