Not a quiz in this post but interesting 'other stuff' I picked up when reading about the traitor ( Russian spy ) Donald Maclean's life of deceit and treachery. He was actually recruited by a man called Arnold Deutsch from Vienna who became one of Russia's most successful spymasters. Now Deutsch had a millionaire cousin called Oscar who lived in London and founded and owned the well known chain of cinemas called the Odeon. Remember the old one in the Kingsway, Swansea? Well the name 'Odeon' is an acronym for OSCAR DEUTSCH ENTERTAINS OUR NATION.

Now, not a lot of people knew that. Including me!! :D

Odeon was a great cinema
I think the first one was in the Uplands Sketty, either in the war or straight after it. They used to hold a Sat. morning childrens mattinee which included "The adventures of Buster Crabbe" I think it was based on Buster Crabbe, a Royal Navel & MI6 diver, he disapeared whilst doing a reconaissance on a Russian cruiser in the early fifties.

And there's me thinking all those years that the name was the Greek word for singing area.
Are you sure about this, Ivor?
You're quite correct @Behindthegoal in that the word odeon is an alternative spelling for ODEUM which basically was a music house in ancient Greece and Rome. But the book is quite specific: A Spy Named Orphan by Roland Philipps published by Penguin Random House UK.

I'm guessing that Deutsch would have been aware of the connotation when he named his cinema chain.

Good knowledge, JF. This was operation 'Claret' when in 1956 Bulganin and Khrushchev visited the UK for a 'friendly' visit. The cruiser Ordzhonikidze was berthed at Portsmouth ready to take the Russians home. Lieutenant Commander Lionel 'Buster' Crabbe was detailed to examine the keel, rudder and propeller of the ship but disappeared. His handless and headless body was caught up in fishing nets some 14 months later.

True life James Bond stuff.

I looked a bit deeper into the Sketty cinema,It was built in 1938 as the Maxime Cinema (I have vague memories of it called that by my elders) It was taken over by Oscar Deutsch's Odeon theatre Ltd. in 1943, but not renamed the Odeon until 1947.

As a bit of fun can you guys with long memories list some old cinemas that come to mind? In addition to those named above I can add the Plaza in the Kingsway that became the Odeon. Empire Oxford Street; Albert Hall Cradock Street; Manor Manselton; Rialto Wind Street ?; Gem Morriston: Palace High Street; The Regal Woodfield Street Morriston; The Castle Castle Street; Elysium High Street; The Tower Townhill; Welfare Fforestfach (became a snooker hall) and the cinema in the old church at the bottom of St Helens Road (I think this was the Rev Leon Atkin's old church in its day)

Visited them all in my time and now feel VERY old! :(

Think you've done the full rounds there Ivor, other than the Empire, Oxford St. which was a theatre, got hypnotised there in my youth by a hypnotist Frank Carson, unbelievable how someone can get inside your head like that.

Carlton and Empire were two seperate entities, almost next door to each other, think it was a furniture shop that seperated them.
The church you refered opposite Joe's was the one Ivor refered to as Leon Atkins church, in my time there Leon was renown for taking the down and outs of the town back there for a nights sleep and a meal. Must have left Swansea before the porno era.

When they started work on the restaurant complex in Mumbles next to Boots they took up the false floor and underneath were tiered cinema seats. I guess that must have been the Tivoli. Well before my time, I didn't arrive in God's Fair City until 1980.
Waterstones looks like it used to be a theatre or cinema, too.

I've seen 'straight' films there and I think it used to be called St Pauls - and yes, Rev Leon did have such a reputation.

I've since remembered a cinema near West Cross but can't for the life of me remember its name. However I do vividly recall visiting relations with my parents in West Cross and all the youngsters were packed off to the cinema nearby. The film was a comedy thriller called "The Cat and the Canary" starring Bob Hope in b/w and although it was mainly a comedy, it scared the shit out of me. :D

Anyone remember this. Opposite the Carlton (the right hand side of Woolworths) was a small bomb site, Barrets the fruit & veg. barrow boys made it theirs. Behind them was a snooker hall upstairs.

I remember the snooker hall because I played there, as I did down the steps at the Castle, above Burton's and at the old Welfare in Fforestfach. Later in life I employed two lads, Paul and Steven, who literally played in the Castle from dawn 'til dusk on the weekends. Both became VERY good players with 100 breaks to their names as youths. Steve had a brass plaque on the table he got his break commemorating his feat. They were so good that had they chosen, they could have turned pro. I think Steve reached the final of the British Boys Championship and he beat Steve Newberry of Neath along the way, someone who DID turn pro with limited success.

I remember with fond memories when myself, Steve, Paul and a guy called Glen who also worked for me, went for a session together at the Castle. Glen was about my stamp as a snooker player (adequate but no great shakes) and after a couple of hours playing round robins between us, he sat down beside me and moaned that all he had done the entire evening was pick out balls from the pockets for the other two.

Steve used to give me at least 2, sometimes 3 blacks start when we played each other and usually beat me easily so good was he. But, I have to say that on at least a couple of occasions I beat him by more than the handicap. I think I exasperated him to death by my poor play. :ROFLMAO:
