Conclusion

1. Woodman

Too many times gave possession away by kicking it long. Unnecessary and stupid. Disappointing.

2. Naughton

Had excellent 16 minutes. Unfortunately, injured in 16th minute. Did nothing wrong.

3. Bidwell

Nothing special going forward. Had one excellent cross and one blocked shot in the second half. Defensively bad, and indirectly responsible for the first Stoke goal. One sloppy pass in our own half in dangerous area, dribbled past close to our six yards box, and unable to block a couple of crosses. Disappointing.

4. Rodon

He had an excellent game. Apart from one sloppy pass in our own half, his passing was great.

5. Hoorn

Solid, but nothing more. Mike was not involved in our attacking play as much as he can. One sloppy pass in our own half in dangerous area.

6. Roberts

Obviously knackered by playing so many games lately. Defensively like a deer caught in the headlights. Six sloppy passes in our own half in dangerous areas. Did ok in the opposition half, but nothing special.

7. Grimes

Offensively had a great game, but defensively just like Roberts had too many sloppy passes (6) in our own half in dangerous areas. Outmuscled by Allen for Stoke's first goal.

8. Fulton

He had a good game going forward in the first half. One sloppy pass in our half in a dangerous area, though solid defensively. Subbed in 62nd minute.

9. Celina

Created something in the first half on the left wing, but like Roberts obviously knackered by playing too many games in a short period of time. Had one sloppy pass in our half in a dangerous area, and three sloppy sideway passes in opposition half that led to Stoke counter-attacks. When tired, wasted on the left flank.

10. Dhanda

Yan had a solid game, especially in the second half. Improved a lot compared to Charlton game, but still too lightweight. He has a good shot, and is not afraid of shooting. Heavily involved in our goal. The kid has a great potential.

11. Ayew

Had a good first half when he scored the goal, but totally disappeared in the second half. Works hard and runs his socks off.

12. Borja

He had four shots, two saved and two blocked. Worked hard and pressed high.

13. Byers

Not contributed much offensively. Had one sloppy pass in our own half.

14. Routledge

Not involved much, but he had two shots and one excellent cross. Did nothing wrong.

As we can see, too many sloppy passes in dangerous areas made Stoke look like the world beaters. Swans played 24 dangerous sloppy passes in their own half. When we add 3 dangerous sideway passes played by Celina in the Stoke half, then we can see why Stoke had a free run towards our box. Stoke were always a couple of passes away from our box. Not good enough.

Game of two halves. Roberts involved in the first half, but disappeared in the offensive right side in the second. Look at the passing of Grimes and Fulton, first half versus second, clearly illustrates that shutdown. We literally stopped playing on the offensive right wing in the second half.

Was it all down to Roberts or did Stoke devise and execute some tactical master stroke.

That was a part of the problem. It was down to Ayew, Byers and Roberts. They didn't create as much in the oposition half in the second half as Ayew, Fulton and Roberts in the first half. I think Roberts and Celina were too tired to play that game. Celina was rightly taken off in the second half, but Roberts had to play due to Naughton's injury in the first half. Celina and Roberts shouldn't have played at all and that's on Cooper. Cooper has to rotate more when we play three games a week. Saying all thay, we didn't lose the game because we were too bad going forward, but because we were poor in our own half.

The biggest problem was that we were not good at passing. From 16th to 62nd minute Stoke pressed us high, and in that period we made plenty of sloppy passes, which we normally don't do.

Ironically, the two goals Stoke scored had nothing to do with our sloppy passing, they were the result of the bad game management. The first goal was scored after Bidwell's poor throw-in. Bidwell had a better option than to throw the ball to Borja who was under pressure. Also, the free-kick we comitted for the second Stoke goal should not have happened.

We should have won the game 1:0 or at least drawn it.

Thanks, @CroJack informative and interesting as always. Good stuff and pinpoints where we are failing. I hope our own analysts are doing their work equally as well. (y)
