Well that was a memorable incident as opposed to a memorable game. But it WAS great wasn't it? :ROFLMAO:

BRENTFORD FOOTBALL CLUB - as they are officially known. With no disrespect intended there's not much to say. Founded in 1889 they are known as The Bees and have played at Griffin Park since 1904, capacity 12,763. They play in red and white striped tops with black shorts and socks. Present manager is Thomas Frank and the club finished a respectable 9th in the Championship last season under Dean Smith now with Villa. They are currently in 17th place with 22 points.

Their list of former managers is impressive and includes: Frank McLintock, Steve Perryman, David Webb, ex Swan Eddy May, Micky Adams, Steve Coppell, Terry Butcher and Mark Warburton.

There are no former players of particular note other than Chris Kamara whilst the present team includes highly rated Welsh international CB, Chris Mepham.

Brentford have won no major honours, and their local rivals are Fulham and QPR. There is often violence at games against QPR because in 1967 QPR attempted a takeover which, had it succeeded, would have seen QPR move to Griffin Park and Brentford quit the Football League. Feelings still run high over this.

I have absolutely no particular memories of games against them although I have seen a few. But I do remember attending Griffin Park for the first time a long time ago and thinking how quaint and small the ground was. We lost 1-3. :(

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY - was founded in 1867 as The Wednesday Football Club and played under that name until adopting its present name in 1929. The club has played at Hillsborough since 1899, which currently has a capacity of 39,732. Nicknamed The Owls they play in blue and white striped tops, black shorts and blue socks. Present manager is Jos Luhukay and the club finished 15th in last season's table. This season they sit 17th in the table with 24 points from 21 games.

Major Honours - Wednesday have won 4 League titles, the last one in 1929/30. They have won 3 FA Cups, the last in 1934/35 and one League Cup in 1990/91.

Notable players include: Trevor Francis, Viv Anderson, Mark Chamberlain, ex Swans Tommy Craig and Lee Chapman, Nigel Pearson and Albert Quixhall (British record transfer fee). Back in the early 60s three of their players, Peter Swan (England international), Tony Kay (England international and British record transfer fee) and David 'Bronco' Layne, were convicted of conspiring to fix matches. They were jailed and banned for life from football later commuted to 8 years. It was a huge scandal at the time as they were all high profile players. Layne, the least known, was a prolific striker netting 58 in 82 for Wednesday and 120 in 195 overall.

Former managers include: Jack Charlton, Howard Wilkinson, Trevor Francis, David Pleat, Ron Atkinson, Terry Yorath, Gary Megson and Carlos Carvalhal.

I've seen a few games between the clubs but nothing of any note. I did watch a lot of Wednesday's games at one time because my daughter's god parents lived a 10 minute walk up the hill from the ground and they were dedicated Wednesday fans.

HULL CITY - Founded in 1904 The Tigers play at the KCOM Stadium capacity 25,450. Last season they finished in 18th place and presently, managed by Nigel Adkins, are 17th with 24 points from 22 games. Traditional colours are black and amber stripes with black shorts and black and amber socks. They have won no major honours.

I can find no former players of any particular note but former managers that posters might have heard of include ex Swan Jan Molby, Steve Bruce, Marco Silva, Nigel Pearson, Peter Taylor, Phil Brown, Phil Parkinson, Nick Barmby, Mike Phelan and Ian Dowie.

One of my earliest memories at the Vetch was us beating Hull 4-1 and I watched from the Enclosure alongside the South stand. So long ago, though, I remember absolutely nothing about the game. Then of course there was THAT game. But I missed it because I was in Spain. I watched Sky Sports football news at my local tapas bar in Mijas with shredded nerves as the scores came in but there was no actual coverage and I had to wait a while before I caught highlights on telly. As we had stayed up, I was happy to settle for that. :) But I can tell you that I danced all the way home.

Ivor, there was one particular Hull player I remember well, even now from the early 50's. Raich Carter.and my reason for remembering him was as a kid I needed his Turf cigarette card photo to complete a set, and never ever got it.

Absolutely right, JF, but I didn't mention him because most on here would have never heard of him. He was a fine footballer who led Sunderland to the 1936 First Division title, the youngest ever captain to do that. He also won the FA Cup with them scoring in the Final. His Football League career spanned from 1931 to 1952 and he played for Hull from 1948 to 1952 scoring 57 in 136 and went on to manage them. At Sunderland he scored 118/245 and at First Division Derby 34/63. He was capped by England 13 times scoring 7 times. He also won the FA Cup with Derby and became the only player ever to do that before and after the war. Whilst he lost his best years to the war, he was one of Stanley Matthews favourite players who called him the Supreme Entertainer, lethal in front of goal.

And they also had that Wizard of Midfield ... Clueless ... who failed to keep them up but apparently caused us so much trouble that Big Nose then spent a club record fee to sign ... and was such a stellar contributor to our midfield that we followed Hull down.

BRISTOL CITY - With all due respect to our West Country neighbours, I haven't much to say here. The club was formed in 1894, play at Ashton Gate, which has a capacity of 27,000 and last season tailed off to finish in 11th position after being well placed for a tilt at the play off positions. Nickname is The Robins and they play in red tops and white shorts with red socks.

Their manager is Lee Johnson, son of recently sacked Cheltenham manager, Gary. As far as I can see, they have NO major honours (much like us until Michael Laudrup came along) but the Robins did win the Welsh Cup in 1933/34. Surprised me did that!! I remember being taken to Ashton Gate when I was a kid to watch the Swans being taken apart 0-4. In those happier days, supporters were allowed to mingle and I asked a Bristol supporter stood next to me about the difference between a Robins fan and a Rovers fan. He explained that, 'Rovers are the working-man's team' with some pride. I can only think that he went to the game hoping to see City lose!

But I went again on 14 October 1989 with my son and his friend. I was thinking of buying a Saab Turbo for my business and my car dealer mate used to let me have a car for a week or two so I could try it out and "live" with it before buying. Anyway, I thought a run to Bristol would be a good test drive for starters and off we went. Loved that motor!! As another mate said, 'it goes like greased shit off a shovel'. Brought us luck that day as well. We had a comfortable 3-1 win with loanee John Salako (great player) scoring twice along with the much maligned Paul Raynor, whom I actually rated. (as did Brian Clough come to that). Sting in the tail though because in the reverse fixture at the Vetch they tuned us 5-0!! :(

Just to finish, it was my misfortune to miss the best game of all as I was on a weekend audit but did manage to listen when the Swans tuned them 7-1 and from what my gleeful mates told me, it should have been 8 !! Oh, well, can't watch 'em all. But here it is and Leon scores as well!

Had to look up the reverse fixture, Bristol City won at the Liberty 0-1. The only goal came 30 seconds in to Weimann. Swansea's first loss on the season. Currently Swansea sit a whole 3 points and 1 goal differential off on Bristol City. Could be an interesting match today. Let's see how the team responds to the mess of a transfer situation. They should just do away with the transfer windows altogether, they don't benefit us in any way. Swansea_BristolCity.PNG

Preston now top of the table as they are leading over Charlton. Been an even game so far though so hopefully Charlton can pull one back.
