My thoughts on Swans v Preston first half

1. It's difficult to play with 10 against 11 players.

Two accurate out of five passes and one tackle is what Aldo Kalulu produced in the first 45 minutes. Oh, I almost forgot, he got dispossessed once. For the vast majority of the first 45 minutes he was running like a headless chicken without any sense for positional awareness. And when he didn't run he watched others who were trying to play some football. Aldo is a winger and he doesn't lack pace, but he definitely lacks footballing brain. Already against Derby I noticed how narrow he played, and he did it again against Preston. Not only that he didn't try to stretch Preston defence on the left flank and use his pace (remember how James used to play for us), but he did nothing in defence to help poor Bidwell who, all alone, had to deal with opposition's crosses and shots. I hope Cooper saw what I saw, at least his analyst should tell him that Kalulu shouldn't be starting any matches for the Swans in future unless he massively improves.

2. We have to figure it out how to respond when opposition presses us high on the pitch

We did it well against Manchester City, so what did we do wrong against Preston in the first 30 minutes? Well, first of all, hats off to Preston for using high press tactics. That's the best tactics against superior passing teams like Swansea. Liverpool used the same tactics against Manchester City in the second part of 2017/2018 season when they destroyed Manchester City both in the Premier League and Champions League. Preston are not Liverpool, and I knew they wouldn't be able to play high intensity football for the full 90 minutes. Already after the first 30 minutes they started playing with less intensity and more in their own half. Suddenly, we could breath, pass the ball and attack. The goal we scored in the first half was not scored because we had figured out how to beat their pressing, but because they had stopped to press us high on the pitch.

So, what did we do wrong in the first half? Well, two things. If you want to beat teams who press you high on the pitch you either have to be good at counter-attacking or you have to be better at passing from the back. Or both. We were not able to counter-attack efficiently mostly because we lacked pace (Borja and Bidwell are not fast enough) and we lacked brain (Kalulu). Some of our rare counter-attacks were unsuccessful because of sloppy passing in the final third. Our passing from the back was awful, we panicked and gave the ball away in dangerous areas allowing Preston to send attack after attack towards our box. Mike, Connor and Joe were the main culprits, and after one stupid clearance by Mike, Preston scored.

I've made forward pass-maps for Bidwell, Rodon, Van der Hoorn and Roberts. You can see how bad we were going forward in the first half against Preston. Yellow arrows are accurate forward passes, red arrows inaccurate. Bended arrows are either lofted passes or crosses.

Conclusion: lack of pace (and brain) up front and too many sloppy passes and clearances are the main reason we underperformed in the first half against Preston. We have to be better against high pressing teams because other teams will copy Preston's tactics and we can easily end up in a situation where we are 3 goals down in the first half.

Preston closely marked Grimes and Vdh leaving Rodon with the responsibility to bring the ball out into play , a task which he failed miserably, his passing was woeful !
Taking the ball short inside the penalty area when teams use high press is risky in the extreme , lose possession and the opposition are immediately in on goal , we need to wise up and use width or clear long , also Woodman is very slow in releasing the ball.
Celina was invisible first half and Kalulu a liability , with Dyer off the field we had no width first half and Preston were first to anything loose and assisted by the ref whose vision was worse than Stevie Wonder we struggled first half.

It is, but we even didn't try to do that. We panicked and time after time made rushed clearances even when we had an option to pass the ball. Even worse, when you make a clearance you have to do it properly and kick the ball into opposition half, but what we did was numerous short clearances directly to Preston players in our half. We were constantly on the back foot because of the sloppy passing.

As I said before, stop Mike and you stop the Swans. All our good transition movement comes through big Mike. He only made 6 passes first half four successful.
He made more passes. Those six passes are forward passes. I haven't included sideway and backward passes because I think they are irrelevant, just a noise.

But you are right about Mike, he has a big influence on us going forward.

Extended highlights:

As you can see Bidwell was involved in both Swans' goals in the second half. He started our attack for the first goal by making a beautiful lofted pass at the left flank, and assisted the second goal with an excellent pin-point cross to Borja.

Love your insights, there is one statistics I'm looking for from last season. How many goals were conceded in the first 15' and 30'? I notice this year both goals were early and it seemed like last year Swansea had a lot of games like that. Playing from behind to ultimately get a draw.

Aldo has so much potential and is still young so hopefully Cooper can build him up. He will be scary for opposing teams. This current team is deep though and he may not get a lot of playing time to work on stretching the opposition.

Preston also had a good 3 handballs in that game and a couple more questionable ones. I think Robert's shot was fair though.

Last season we were behind by one or more goals 14 times in the first 30 minutes an 6 times in the first 15 minutes.

We conceded 17 goals last season in the first 30 minutes. That's 27 % of all goals conceded. We conceded 7 goals in the first 15 minutes, that's 11 % of all goals conceded.

I was probably too harsh on him, but he has to be more involved when he gets a chance. He has to make himself available and run into the channels to recieve passes. 1 tackle and 2 accurate passes (one of the accurate psses was a backward pass) is not enough. He didn't even try to dribble or run past opposition defenders. He's got pace, he just needs to use it properly.

Yes, definitely 3 handballs, and the referee 'forgot' to blow the whistle. As for the penalty I think it was a dubious one.

I just hate giving up an early goal and playing from behind. It makes it much harder to get the 3 points. But the team has character to come back. I really hope Kalulu gets the rhythm of the team figured out. He has the pace and footwork.

Yeah, you can't win 1:0 anymore and you you have to score two to get 3 points. And opposition can just park the bus and wait to damage you from counter-attack.

But the team has character to come back.
Indeed. That Preston penalty was a huge blow and one minute later we scored. I'm impressed with this team's mentality. They have a never give up attitude, they work hard and they keep going.
