IS THIS?

A flash in the pan? Are we going to come crashing down to earth at some point? Is this a false dawn?

No, I'm not being a pessimist, I'm just trying to find a balance between our actual performances and our position in the table. Let's get real here. For large parts of the game, Preston were better than us and could well have won had they taken their chances. And that certainly applies to the game at QPR which was something of a smash and grab. The players should have worn masks for that one! The win against Hull could easily have gone against us as well as they also gave us a lot of problems.

Personally, I don't think we've played that well, our possession stats being well down on last year. That said it's often argued that a team that doesn't play particularly well, but still manages to win games and points has something going for them. And there's much truth in that. It's a complete contrast to when we used to completely dominate teams but still contrived to lose the game. Right now, I feel that our performances can be compared to the curate's egg - good in parts.

We certainly seem to be more clinical in front of goal, which is to be applauded but we have also benefitted from our opponents' wastefulness in this respect. We have certainly shown a great deal of character and resilience that has greatly impressed me and something I feel we have lacked in recent seasons. But is this enough to make us realistic promotion contenders? Being honest, I'd say no, it doesn't. Not on its own. I think that Cooperman, to quote his new moniker from @Ladygargar 's excellent cameo on air, has to find a way to get his team playing with more fluency and start improving the passing and possession stats as a matter of urgency: something that might come about when he eventually arrives at his most effective lineup. And we must also start performing for 90+ minutes of every game and not for just the odd moments here and there as is the case right now.

I hope that I haven't come across as being pessimistic because that is far from being the case. I'm just trying to be realistic about where we're at right now and what we need to do to consolidate ourselves as genuine promotion contenders. It is well within our grasp in my opinion but there's still much work to be done to make this a reality rather than a pipedream. And the owners can help by making sure that we retain the quality services of Ayew and Baston, as I feel that they can be key to a successful promotion challenge this season. COYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, we are in a false position. We have scraped our wins out, but points on the board are what it is all about. Let's see how we do at Leeds , as we will be mullered if we play like we have, mind you we could do that and stuff them on the break! Our best start in years yet we have not dominated any team in the way we are used to!

The table tells us that at the end of all of the matches we have played with the potential to lose or were not the better team, we were the better team. We have conceded few goals, no set piece goals other than a penalty, and have pounced on opportunity to dramatically improve output in offense. But, have we played our best football ... as @ivoralljack has stated, no we have not. There are areas where we need to sharpen our focus, consistency, and quality for a full 90. What happens when that happens?

If I remember correctly when we walked L1 under Martinez, we didn’t really get going and establish a gap at the top of the table until early November, from there on it was just business as usual. The Championship is a slog of 46 games. To prevail we will need quality, quantity as in from everybody in the squad, minimal injuries so that depth or lack thereof doesn’t become a factor, fair handedness from officials, and nothing but bloody luck from time to time. But, as I have always believed, if you do all the little things right the big things tend to fall into place ... is that creating your own luck

Perhaps one of the reasons we prevailed against these other clubs is that although for periods of matches they looked like they could murder us, one they didn’t demonstrating resilience, two it was for only a portion of the game not a full 90, and three they were having to play unsustainably above themselves or do so. When the opposition’s energy sapped, we adjusted tactically, we pounced and instead of piddling around put the sword in.

I commented weeks ago, in discussions over Cooper’s appointment, that August would be the deciding factor for me. He will either have the plot well in hand, or not be up to it, or our loss of Oli and Dan would be critical and nobody would step up with goals. Well, to date: Oli and Dan who? Cooper has been Sousa-esque, our goals against is dramatically down. We’ve been blessed with the retention of a rejuvenated Borja and Ayew, a much better keeper, and Garrick by Christmas looks like he could establish himself as Dan 2.0 plus.

So, the Leeds match will be the acid test ... quality team, smart coach, clever powerful unit on the field. Presuming we don’t mess up Brum ... we could go to Elland Road and be the team to beat. Anything but a loss there and we have the platform to power on. And, even if we lose, if we lose “well” (!?!) we can still lay claim to being a team to beat. Like times of yore, others will be adjusting to try to contain and pray to beat us, not the other way around.

Is this? No, it’s looking like it is the real deal. Our weaknesses are in areas that can only improve.

I've watched all the full matches back when I get home from work and I'm tending to agree. While it's fantastic to have this many points already we really haven't shown we can dominate a match; something that a top team will do. Obviously the best team finds a way to win, even when not playing well, but we haven't really played a half of football where I think to myself that we should have scored 4 or 5.

Our style is effective under Cooper but it's no means pretty and I feel like Birmingham will give us a hell of a time tomorrow as this is exactly the type of team that will sit back and give us many problems because we don't know how to break them down; it's going to be a scrappy affair I think.

I don't think we ever control a match, something that Potter tried his best for us to do. We played some brilliant stuff last year but the brilliant stuff didn't get us many points in times when we should have. Maybe Cooper sees that we dropped way too many points from dominating positions last year and has tweaked it to be less pleasing on the eye but more effective on the scoreline. It's too early to tell, we need to see how we come back from a harsh defeat in order to tell how high we'll get this season.

We have two weapons though. Andre and Borja; let's be honest, both these players are PL players. If we keep these players during this window then we have every reason to believe we'll be in or very near the top 6 come January. Lose one or both and we will be teetering in midtable. Borja has saved our ass twice as has Ayew and without them I think we'd be looking towards the other end of the table right now.

I agree it's wrong to be too negative this early and this high up in the table but I can't help but fear that a rough patch in form and loss of the two above will really see us falter as I don't see signs of us really dominating any team.

It’s a little fragile yes but they’ll grow in strength and character if Cooperman can keep them tight and most importantly together - I’m not a fan of the way Potter left us - far from it, but he clearly left us in a better state than the one he found us in and I’d take a fragile top 4 any day over lolloping about the bottom of the EPL with lazy overpaid prima-donnas who don’t deserve the shirt - I’m enjoying! I leave the finer points and statistics to you lot - I’m glass half full, you debate the cut of the vessel COYS!!!

This ^^^.

Swans are much better than what we have seen them perform in the first four Championship matches. On the other hand, Preston and QPR played their best football...and we beat them.

Possession is only important in terms of reducing the time opposition have the ball, otherwise possession stats are useless. Also, number of shots and shots on target are useless stats if we don't take into account the quality of them.

I'll post today a thread with stats that matter, and you will see that neither Derby, Preston nor QPR output was better than ours.

And I've forgotten this. We have to improve our passing accuracy. The vast majority of the chances opposition have had against us is not something they have created, it's because we have gifted them those chances. We have to eradicate sloppy passing in our half and we'll be dominating games.

All fair points that we could have lost every match so far. Stealing points away at QPR and even drawing with Derby. I felt like last year they were giving up points at the end of a match far too often.

It's up to the owners not to screw up a good thing. Ayew and Borja will be key if and when it comes to the final stretch. We're really missing Daniel James on the wing. But Dyer, Celina and Byers are a good midfield. The defense is good with VdH, Roberts, Rodon and Bidwell. Naughton is still on the bench. Swans are young and the potential ceilings are high. The bench is deep right now so they can handle injuries well. I'm sure everyone is afraid of crashing down but this team is good enough for a playoff spot.

We have to improve our passing accuracy
This is the key. No, we haven't dominated any game for the full ninety yet but we will once we eliminate those (all too frequent) instances of giving the ball away cheaply. Even Mike is guilty of that in some games. Kalulu has been the worst culprit. I reckon more time focusing on this on the training ground is the key. Other than this maintaining our hugely improved ability on set pieces (we are yet to let anyone score from them) is the next key. I agree our points exceed our current perfromances but I am optimistic that our performances will catch up with our points rather than our points falling to our current performance level. That is as long as we hold onto to at least Baston and preferably Ayew as well.

There! Hardly a stray pass against Birmingham (all I can recall is one dangerous stray pass from Rodon in the first half) and solid defense at all the set pieces (and in open play). Our performance caught up to our points against Birmingham. As to the slow pace in the first half, wouldn't you have played slow in that sweltering heat?!

Yup, definitely a much improved showing today over anything I can remember under Coop so far. First half we were dominant but with no penetration; second half we started to actually take some chances and scored from them. Not many teams are going to sit back in their own half and let us have our way with them though. Birmingham were atrocious today but a good win is a good win, under Potter we would've probably just got a draw.

For anyone not at the ground it was absolutely baking there today, I marvelled at the fitness of our squad to be honest; Connor Roberts was outstanding and took a fair few knocks, Ayew was a different class and it showed, not sure we will be able to hang on to him or Borja but our stock would be depleted without them. The first quarter saw some lovely passages of play; they’ve clearly been very well drilled because some of what they pulled off was sublime to watch and intuitive in nature; they just knew where to put a cheeky pass and their target would be there; flashes of brilliance might yet build into something more consistent; it will take practice, support and patience but oh my goodness I was very happy with the way the game went today 🙏

There aren't many teams in this division that can boast 90 minutes of football without allowing the opposition a single shot on goal.
Must have made Freddie feel guilty about collecting his wages.
