GRIMES

The Blobster

Prediction Champ
Grimes has given a 2 fingered salute to Martin , Southampton and any other interested predators by signing a new 4 year contract extension that takes him up to 2027 .
This shows his positivity in the direction the club is going and should be a positive marker for any potential incoming new players.

I'm of two minds here. First, as many have said, it's a good sign of confidence in our direction and the future, as well as in what Duff is trying to do. He's also a good "Leon Britton" type of player. But second, he's not the greatest skipper in the world and I'd be happy to see him displaced in favour of someone a bit more dynamic who can rally the side when we're down. Instead he seems to bring them down even more. For that role I want an "Ash Williams" type skipper.

I would get rid of the classic captain's role and instead use three captains - one in defence, one in midfield and one in attack.

I think that might confuse things if interests conflicted. For example, the defence might want more midfield help but, at the same time, attackers might be demanding more support to try and get goals. When I played there was the usual captain, of course, but there always a couple of more senior, experienced players supporting him both on the field and in the dressing room. Ivor advocated this setup in his teams and expected these players to set an example to the younger players and also help them through games by continually talking to them and prompting them. I guess it's a form of multiple captains but less strictly defined.

Yes. When I said three captains, I meant the players who can keep an eye on their partners in defence, midfield and attack. Are they running enough? Are they positioned correctly? Are they making the necessary runs with and without the ball? It's difficult for a centre-back who is a captain to keep control of the attack and vice versa. I'd like we have more players with responsibility for the team's performance.

The team's focus has been so youth-oriented that there is definitely a lack of veteran leadership. Swansea's average age is 24.5, something like the third or fourth youngest squad in the division.
