Already last summer during the pre-season match against Plymouth it was obvious what our football would look like in season 2022/23. It was clear that there were some dangerous signs in our style of play that had to be fixed rather sooner than later.
- We are passing the ball around, not progressing with it, overplaying
- Obafemi is wasteful
- Ntcham can run and shoot, though he can't run for 90 minutes
- Our playing out from the back sucks
- We are allowing too many crosses
- Both our sides are often left undefended
- We have plenty of ball but not incisive or explosive around and in opposition box
- Lati is too slow for a full-back and can't defend (block) crosses
- We concede from counter-attacks
- We pussyfoot with our possession, and our passing out from the backs brings us in dangerous situations when we inevitably lose possesion
- Opposition attacks the space behind our wing-backs
- We neither shoot nor cross enough, and are not direct enough in the final third
- We pass backwards (recycle the ball) when we should attack opposition box
All of this, or almost all of this, has repeated itself like a broken record last season. First in mid-March 2023 Martin fixed what should have been fixed in the very beginning of last season.
P.S. I remember I was surprised how good Plymouth were against us. Now I am not surprised they've won the League One title.
