Gomes Injury and Son Sanction

My initial take on the tackle from seeing the incident from various angles during the match coverage was that although Son may have impeded Gomes, Son did not actually make contact with the ankle that suffered the injury. And, that unlike the Neil Taylor incident v Sunderland (?) a few years ago, the injury resulted from the subsequent impact of the player's foot with the ground and the twisting that occurred. I have even read - from a comment posted on a BBC site - that there was a secondary challenge from Aurier that caused the injury. From video that I have seen, although Aurier is coming in with a challenge, there is also no contact there that caused the injury and that the injury causing impact happened just before the arrival of Aurier.

Following from the incident, there was a yellow, then a red, which the Prem have clarified was given for "endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge". This has resulted in a ton of controversy: Premier League blasted after revealing why Son was sent off for Gomes tackle.

I don't believe that the Sunderland player that injured Taylor was given a red.

My thoughts are that although a yellow may have been justified, what actually caused the injury was a freak event and not deserving of a red. There is now discussion that VAR should have been used to analyze the situation before the red was given.

Your thoughts?

Firstly, I think Taylor was the initiator of the tackle, the Sunderland player then fell on his leg. Taylor got a yellow.
There's no complete video of the Gomes incident, but the look on Son's face when he saw the injury says it all.
I cannot accept that the severity of the injury should affect the punishment meted to the offender. The logical conclusion to that would be that if Gomes had jumped over the tackle Son would have escaped with a verbal warning.

I think Martin Atkinson became as affected by the sight of Gomez as Son, Aurier and others on the field and resoorted to the only tool at his disposal to express his upset - a red card. I hope it is appealed and it should be overturned, but I fear the emotions and PR surrounding the incident will mean Spurs do not actually appeal, leaving Son as unjustly suspended. I guess we shall see.
