So the new rule is the kick does not have to leave the area , fine ,I have no problem with that.
The problem starts when teams press high and they still play the ball short. Lose possession and the oppo are straight in on goal.
Much safer for the center backs to spread wide and play out down the line than risk losing the ball inside the penalty area.
Just because the ball doesn't have to leave the area doesn't mean you have to play it short every time !
