Blackburn are topping Expected Goals For Table, and Expected Goals Difference Table. They are second in the Expected Position Table, and eight in Expected Goals Against Table.

So far they have scored 18 goals, and by many have been called "a free scoring team".

But how good are they? The answer is simple: not so good as their stats show. Thirteen of their goals are scored against three of the poorest teams in the Championship: Wycombe, Derby and Coventry. Both Wycombe and Coventry had a player sent off.

Their first game of the season was against Bournemouth away. A pretty even affair, where Bournemouth recorded xG 0.92, and Blackburn xG 0.66. Neither side was creative, and three of the goals were scored from outside of box. One of the Blackburn's goals was a result of a comical howler from the Bournemouth goalkeeper, and the other one was a result of an incredible passivity by the Bournemouth defence.
Their second game was against Wycombe. The first goal they scored was from a penalty kick, and the second one can be attributed to a poor goalkeeping. The third one came after an excellent counter-attack. Then, in the second half, one of the Wycombe players was sent off, and Blackburn scored their fourth goal after another poor goalkeeping by Wycombe. The fifth goal was a good one. Blackburn amassed 3.47 xGoals For, which shouldn't be a surprise considering they played against a really poor and naive team, and they played the whole second half against ten men.

In their third game they beat Derby away 4:0. The first goal they scored was an excellent counter-attack. The second came from a long range shot when the Derby defence was sleeping. The third one came from a deflected shot, and the forth again after a counter-attack. In a game where Derby had four excellent chances and scored from none of them, Blackburn scored from all of their chances. Blackburn earned 2.41 xGF in this game.

There weren't any goals in the Cardiff game, but Blackburn were a better team. They had three huge chances, but they were not so "free scoring" in that game. Blackburn 2.01 xGF to Cardiff's 0.69 xGF. And Cardiff's Lee Tomlin was sent off in the second half.

Their second defeat this season came at home turf against Forest. They lost 1:0. They created a miserable 0.29 xGF in this game, compared to Forest 1.49 xGF. They simply deserved to lose.
Their third defeat was away at Watford. Watford won 3:1 in a pretty even game (xGF 2.23 Watford - 2.28 Blackburn). Blackburn scored from a longe range shot, and missed a penalty.

Blackburn's third win was away against Coventry where one of the Coventry players was sent off in 14th minute. Against 10 men Blackburn recorded 4.31 xGF, which is not a surprise.

In their last game at home turf against Reading, Blackburn were a better team ( 1.58 xGF to 0.50 xGF ), but somehow they lost 4:2.

Conclusion

Blackburn's xG are inflated and earned in the games against some of the poorest teams in this league. Furthermore, in two of these games opposition players were sent off. They haven't won a single game against a bit of a decent team (lost 4, drew 1).

They are good at counter-attack, and can score from outside of box, but they are not a "free-scoring" team.

I think we're a better side but I'd like to see us convert a few more of our chances. With Reading losing we could make decent inroads into their lead if we win. We never seem to do things easily, so again I'm going 2-1 to us. We really could do with winning this because the lads' confidence will rocket if we do and we'll need that for the next couple of fixtures.

As predicted, Bristol good run is over. They are out of the top six, and I think you won't see them in the top six again.
