Ah well, we flatter to deceive yet again. One thing is for sure: we need a dynamic midfielder who makes things happen (eg Besic at Boro had a great game last night) and we DEFINITELY need a clinical striker. Our present squad is lacking right now. Too many players are content to run out on the field, make a few passes, put in the odd tackle, go on a few runs then mentally tell themselves: that's it. I've done my bit. They just go through the motions without making any MEANINGFUL and consistent contribution. It's all about character and attitude and this set of players is sorely lacking either. Talent is not enough unless it's being used properly and I don't sense that it is. We lack leaders to drive the rest and I hope that Potts can see it.

We start the match with our best technical players on the bench in James, Grimes, Carroll. We start McKay which is a disadvantage right there. We start Cian who did ok, delighted to see him get an opportunity, but the game screamed for Naughton to play his new role as right CB / roving midfield.

We play so much better in the front foot going forward with tempo and technical superiority. For me today was 3 points dropped.

I don't know about you but I am getting tired of constant chopping and changing. Give me a settled starting XI, and if some of them don't perform sub them.

Once again the stats were all in our favour, but the predominant one that stands out is Shots 15, shots on target 4,as Ivor keeps pointing out there is a dire need for a clinical finisher. I was unable to get a stream for the game today, but noted Villa conceded 8 corners compared to our 3. one wonders what Llorenti or Bony would have made from them. We are now beginning to lose touch with the top six. Next game Blackburn, very much on form losing just one of there last five games.

This is a game we could well have won. As usual we allowed the oppo playmaker, in this case Grealish, all the room and time in the world. And our defenders should stop handing out early Christmas presents as well. Some of the marking was appalling! Stats: Villa first.

Possession: 47-53 Shots: 11-15 OT: 5-4 Corners: 3-8 Fouls: 13-8

I'm off to the bookies to lump on DG10 scoring on Tuesday night .
4 ex players have scored against us this season , Danny will be the 5th.
Potter needs to stop tinkering ,, play his strongest 11 in a system that suits them and concentrate on our game play rather than trying to nullify the opposition.
MULDER MUST BE THE NO.1 KEEPER.

Been reading many comments online saying the same thing and it's something I also agree with. I'm getting concerned that Potts is becoming an habitual tinkerman and some of his team selections bother me too. I'm baffled that McKay is still being picked when we have the likes of Dyer, Routs and even Dhanda who could slot in there. I can only assume that McKay is wowing everyone in training but he's certainly not doing it in matchplay.

I appreciate that part of Potter's DNA is his ability to switch gameplans and tactics to suit the situation but there's also a lot to be said for selecting a settled team and allowing them the chance to learn each others' games and gel as a unit. When we get it right, we look as good, if not better, than any other team in the Championship but we look so disjointed and lightweight when we don't.

I have faith in Potts but already we are getting to the stage where we need some Ws on our record: firstly to keep in touch with the top 6 and secondly, perhaps more importantly, to avoid getting sucked into a scrap at the bottom. Blackburn isn't exactly a 'must win' game but we sure as Hell don't want to lose it. One thing is certain - we desperately NEED a clinical finisher. Oli is a great trier with bags of potential but we need an experienced instinctive striker to start putting away the chances we are creating. Even if Bony returns, he's been out for so long he'll need a few games to get up to speed, so the options Pott's has got right now are limited. But whatever he chooses to go with had better start producing some results quickly or we'll be flirting with relegation again.

In another post Ivor mentioned ex Swan Trevor Ford as a Villa player. After his retirement he used to call to see his aunt who lived close by me, and often called in the Union Inn in Port Tennant for a pint.Talking to him one evening about Villa,he pulled out a small booklet from his inside pocket, it was called "Aston Villa players rule book". He opened it on a certain page and said read that.It actually said "No sexual intercourse after Wednesday night".
